St. Manchen's Cow
One of the most interesting and famous stories that surrounds
Lemonaghan and St.Manchan is that of St.Manchan's cow. This
famous cow supplied the people of Lemonaghan with milk, free
of charge.
The farmers of neighbouring Kilmonaghan began to get jealous
of the cow and decided to steal her from St.Manchan. So, one
day when St.Manchan was away, people from Kilmonaghan came and
dragged the cow home. The cow, suspecting something was up,
left marks of her tail and hooves as she was being dragged backwards
to Kilmonaghan.
When St.Manchan returned, he followed the marks in search of
his precious cow. By the time he found the cow, she had been
killed and was being cooked. Yet, legend has it that St.Manchan
picked the pieces of the cow out of the pot, put them together,
struck them with his stick and immediately the cow came back
to life.
She was as good as she always was apart from being a bit lame,
due to the loss of a piece of her foot.
She continued supplying the people of Lemonaghan with her rich
milk again, free of charge. To this day, this famous custom
of not selling milk, still lives on in Leamonaghan.
